Upholding a personal sense of style while predicting the next best thing for the upcoming season can be somewhat hard work, yet Phoebe manages to do it effortlessly. With pops of vibrant shades, tailored suit trousers, and a confident mindset, this London-based law graduate was bound to be admired.

We spoke to her (virtually of course!) to discuss her experiences being a midsize student stylist in the influencing industry and her take on what the SS21 season will look like.

You have a high number of fashion-influenced followers - how do you feel knowing so many people follow you for your hauls and fashion advice?

It feels really strange! I have a lot of messages and comments saying how they recreated my outfits, asking for links, and sometimes people tag me and I can see their recreations! It feels like such a compliment that people look to me for fashion inspiration and I take a lot of pride in my wardrobe, so it really is the biggest compliment!

As a midsize student stylist - how important is it that midsize girls are represented in an industry like fashion?

I think it’s so important midsize girls are represented. Through blogging and Instagram, I’ve discovered a lot of size-inclusive brands and ones that show a variety of bodies - not just sample size or plus. It’s made me feel a lot more confident in what I wear and how I dress, and how I look at myself in the mirror. Seeing other girls on Insta have a belly in tight clothes makes me feel a lot better about mine and the more representation, the better! I think it’ll help a lot of young girls as so many girls our age - those who grew up in the 2000s/1990s ultra-skinny era have subconsciously been damaged by the slim bodies of Paris Hilton, Kate moss etc. that were shown so often. We believed that was the only acceptable body to have when in reality, bodies come in all shapes and sizes and all deserve to be called beautiful and get representation.

What do you think is the key to being a fashion influencer on Instagram? As more and more people are joining the industry - what helps to stand out?

I think you definitely need a niche. I’ve gone for midsize and also talked about life as a graduate, as it’s a real struggle! Being relatable is really important as being out of touch doesn’t make people want to follow you, or if you are perhaps more into high-end fashion, etc. I follow girls who create amazing fashion like @katelanpell. Even though I don’t look like her nor have her budget for her wardrobe, the content she creates is just gorgeous. So I feel like you need a mix of finding a relatable niche to get started with, building your following, and making amazing content as that will then draw in people who perhaps don’t relate to your niche but enjoy the images you create!

What is your favourite statement item of clothing in your wardrobe right now?

My H&M purple fur trim coat. When I saw it on the app I bought it within seconds. It’s so gorgeous and I dream of a Saks pott coat one day, but for my student budget, the H&M one will have to do for now! And I do love it!

What are you most looking forward to wearing in Spring/Summer 2021?

I’m most looking forward to wearing linen and summer dresses. Linen is big every S/S but this year it seems to be even bigger and I love the neutral tones. I also have a strong summer dress collection and I add one or two pieces every year because I wear them every S/S and just love how comfy and cool they are whilst also being so cute.

What is one trend you are loving currently?

I love the trend in trousers! And the wide-leg jeans. They are so much comfier than skinny jeans and tight trousers, and for a girl with big thighs like me, I feel more comfortable with a wide leg.

Lastly, which trend can you not get behind at all?

I can’t really get behind the 70s print trend. I think it looks so cool on other girls like @Oliviagraceherring etc, but I just can’t pull it off. I also feel like it doesn’t suit my style or wardrobe, and I have one bodysuit from Shein that’s about the limit I can go with this trend. I don’t want to waste money or stray away from my actual style for the sake of what’s in Zara at the moment. I’ll leave this one to the cool girls!
